AFDA alumni win 21 Golden Horns at SAFTAs 2022

After receiving a massive 64 nominations for the 16th annual Saftas (South African Film and Television Awards) AFDA alumni picked up 21 Golden Horns at the Safta awards held virtually on 2 & 3 September.

AFDA would like to give a big shout out to Jordy Sank took home the award for Emerging Filmmaker, an award which is bestowed to an up and coming South African Filmmaker who is making big waves in the industry. His multi award-winning documentary film “I Am Here” also won 3 awards including Best Feature Documentary.

“I can’t begin to describe how surreal this weekend has been. Me personally winning 2 Golden Horns and “I Am Here”, winning some major documentary awards including Best Feature Documentary, has been beyond my wildest dreams!!

A special shout out to Gabriella Blumberg and Esther Badenhorst for working on this film for 2 years around the clock and beyond!! AFDA alumni won Golden Horns in a host of categories, winning Best Feature Film, Best Feature Documentary Film, Best made for TV Movie, Best lifestyle programme, Best TV Soap, Best telenovela, Best TV drama and Most Popular Soap or Telenovela.

Alumnus Mandla N, the producer and director of Mzanzi Magic’s “DiepCity” had a great SAFTAs winning the Best achievement in directing – telenovela award and with “DiepCity” picking up a further 4 Golden Horn awards.

Alumnus Ebenhaezer Smal (Haezer) won 2 Golden Horn awards, picking up the Best achievement in sound design – feature film award and the Best achievement in original music/score – feature film award for his work on the feature film “Fried Barry”, directed by fellow AFDA alumni Ryan Kruger.

AFDA alumni cinematographers once again did not disappoint winning Best achievement in cinematography – TV comedyTroukoors” – Fahema Hendricks, Best achievement in cinematography – TV drama “Reyka” – Tom Marais and Best achievement in cinematography – feature filmGlasshouse” – Justus De Jager.
