AFDA is proud to announce that 3 feature films, that have AFDA alumni in key roles, have won 6 awards at the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) 2025.
The 2025 South African Oscar candidate film The Heart is a Muscle, produced by AFDA alumni Brett Michael Innes and Adam Thal and starring alumni Keenan Arrison walked away with 4 awards: Best Debut Feature Film by a Director, Achievement in Editing, Achievement in Cinematography, and yes, the big one, Best Film.
The 2024 South African Oscar candidate film Old Righteous Blues, directed by alumni Muneera Sallies won the Achievement in Soundtrack award and the Sci-Fi film, Spelonk, directed by alumni Desmond Denton picked won the award for Achievement in Make-up.
“In an industry that is predominantly Euro and US centric, it is an honour to be recognized by an African collective for the work that was created in Cape Town. It is proof, yet again, that our stories are truly universal when they are authentically local.” says producer of The Heart is a Muscle, Brett Michael Innes.
The Africa Movie Academy Awards is an annual entertainment award ceremony, presented to recognize excellence among African and non-African professionals, who have contributed to the African film industry. The awards were founded by Peace Anyiam-Osigwe and are currently run by the Africa Film Academy.
