AFDA: Powering the Creative Economy Through Strategic Industry Partnerships

Jan 26, 2026 | News

Since its founding in 1994, AFDA, The No1 School for the Creative Economy, has established itself as South Africa’s premier creative arts institution, not only by training storytellers and innovators but by building meaningful partnerships with industry leaders that connect students to real‑world creative practice and professional networks.

One of AFDA’s notable recent collaborations is its role as the Official Education Partner for Fame Week Africa, a major pan‑African creative industries event. In both 2024 and 2025, AFDA played a central role in the programme, engaging students, staff and alumni in discussion panels, workshops, film screenings and masterclasses.

Through this partnership, AFDA supports emerging creatives and places its community in direct conversation with industry professionals across film, television, music, animation, fashion and entertainment technology, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to professional development and collaboration across Africa’s creative sectors.

AFDA maintains a suite of technology and equipment partnerships that ensure students train on industry‑standard tools and platforms. Key collaborations include relationships with:

  • ARRI – world‑class camera and lighting systems used across global film and television production, giving students hands‑on experience with professional cinematography gear.
  • Adobe – access to leading creative software used for editing, design, visual effects and post‑production workflows.
  • Apple – creative technology solutions supporting production, design and digital storytelling.

These partnerships help AFDA students develop the technical proficiency required in modern production environments and prepare them for careers that demand fluency with professional tools.

On the academic front, AFDA is a full member of CILECT (International Association of Film and Television Schools): a prestigious global network including film schools such as USC, UCLA and La Fémis.

This membership places AFDA within a global conversation about creative education standards and also creates opportunities for international collaboration, student exchanges, industry insight exchanges and participation in global forums that enrich the creative learning experience.

Historically, AFDA has also worked with platforms such as Showmax and MNet to showcase student films, broadening the audience for emerging creative work and connecting student filmmakers with wider streaming audiences.

AFDA films are consistently selected for prestigious festivals both locally and internationally, where student work has been showcased and recognised and celebrated.

The school’s productions have also earned significant industry accolades. AFDA students have won multiple South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs), Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards, Durban International Film Festival, Loeries, and other competitive awards circuits.

AFDA’s industry engagement doesn’t stop at formal partnerships. Through its internship programme, the institution invites companies and creative organisations to host students in roles that offer mentorship, real project experience and networking opportunities, helping ensure graduates enter the creative economy with practical insight and professional links.

AFDA’s strategic industry partnerships, from education partnerships like Fame Week Africa and global alliances through CILECT, to technology collaborations and platform showcases, form an ecosystem that supports student creativity, professional readiness and global visibility.

These relationships reflect AFDA’s commitment to educate future creatives and connect them meaningfully to the evolving creative economy and to empower them to shape the creative industries both in South Africa and internationally.
