Dr Temara Prem is an academic and filmmaker based in Durban, South Africa, specialising in postcolonial film theory and filmmaking. She holds a PhD in Film and Television from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. Her doctoral research examines identity representation in post-apartheid South African cinema, contributing to global discussions on cultural specificity and representation in film. She also earned an MFA in Film and Television from AFDA Cape Town, where her thesis explored Baroque aesthetics and their influence on post-war expressionist cinema. This combination of theoretical and technical expertise informs her teaching and creative work.

Dr Prem also has extensive experience in the film and media industries, having worked on productions in the capacities of cinematographer and director, including directing projects for BET Africa and SABC 1. In addition to her academic and professional roles, Dr Prem is committed to promoting diversity and inclusion within the film industry and educational institutions. She serves on the Standing Committee on Ethics, Diversity, and Inclusion (SCEDI) for CILECT (The International Association of Film and Television Schools). She is also a member of SWIFT (Sisters Working in Film and Television).
“I decided in June last year that I’d “Dean there, done that”, but it took a long time to find the perfect replacement. I’m very pleased to announce that Dr Temara Prem will be stepping into the role from the 1nd February 2025. Temara has been part of the AFDA Durban Campus since its foundation in 2013, first as a student, then as a staff member, then as Programme Coordinator of MP, and finally now, as the dean. I have no doubt that Temara will do an excellent job as her wisdom and calmness in the face of pressure will stand her in great stead. Temara has proved herself in the field of film, management and in research, most especially at the Cilect Conference in Beijing where she was asked to be part of Cilect’s Standing Committee on Ethics, Diversity and Inclusivity (SCEDI). I’m sure that Temara will take the campus to even greater heights than I’ve done during my four-and-a-half-year tenure and it will be a joy to have someone I know for so many years and trust completely to take over from me.” says outgoing AFDA Durban dean Dr Janet van Eeden.
