AFDA alumni behind the scenes on Showmax series “Outlaws”

A bunch of AFDA alumni hold key positions on the credits list on South Africa’s first contemporary Western series, “Outlaws”, now streaming on Showmax. AFDA alumna Flavia Motsisi is credited as an Executive Producer on the series, SAFTA award winner Ntobeko Dlamini takes the Cinematography credit, Haezer takes an Editing credit and SAFTA award winner Waldemar Coetsee takes the Production Design credit.

“Outlaws” a Showmax Original is the story of two families at war with each other: the Zulu, cattle-farming Biyela clan, and the Basotho, cattle-raiding Ts’eoles. South Africa’s first modern-day Western series, “Outlaws” is created by Tshedza Pictures’ Phathu Makwarela and Gwydion Beynon, who’ve won five Best Scriptwriting SAFTAs in the past four years for smash-hit shows like The Republic and The River, which was also nominated for an International Emmy. Outlaws is Tshedza’s seventh production to date and their second Showmax Original, building on the success of “Adulting”, which set a record for the most first-day views of any drama on the streaming service.

The series boasts an ensemble cast that seamlessly blends fresh faces with seasoned performers, including Nolwazi Shange, Mnqobi Kunene, and fan-favourite Thembinkosi Mthembu.

It’s safe to say that ‘Outlaws’ has achieved remarkable success, currently claiming the coveted #1 spot on Showmax’s Top 20 list and boasting one of the most explosive launches in the realm of scripted television. it’s well-written, beautifully shot and relatable. It has all the makings to be the streamer’s next big series after the success of “The Wife” and “Adulting”.
