AFDA is proud to announce the AFDA Durban 2023 third year undergraduate films “Hobo” and “Cipher”, both written and directed by Matthew Oscroft and produced by Skyye Ndlovu have been nominated in the Best Student Film award category at the 2024 Simon Mabhunu Sabela KZN Film and Television Awards.

“Matthew and I are absolutely thrilled to have received 2 nominations for Best Student Film. It’s certainly a validation of our efforts and commitment to uplifting our Motion Media industry, and this is only the beginning. Our main objective when making these films was to explore pertinent and innovative aspects of our world – with Hobo exploring our current society and the themes of Materialism and the effects of Social Media; and Cipher exploring the future of society and the themes of technology, artificial intelligence and how these will be used in corrupt and immoral ways. When we got nominated last year for our film The Yellow Dress, we didn’t win but it was the motivation we needed to think bigger and push our limits even further, to create Hobo & Cipher.” says producer, Skyye Ndlovu.

The awards ceremony is set to take place on 20 July. The Simon Mabhunu Sabela awards recognise outstanding achievement and excellence within the South African film and television industry, focusing on KwaZulu-Natal. The nominees include actors, producers, directors, and various film and television technicians.

This year there is a new public participation category, focusing on reality TV. The public can engage in the nomination and judging process through social media public voting system, entries are currently open until 28 June.

This year’s nominees reflect the remarkable journey and significant contributions of the country’s Film and Television industry, inspired by visionaries like Simon Mabhunu Sabela, whose pioneering efforts have shaped South African entertainment for generations.

The nominees were announced at Coastlands Skye Hotel in Umhlanga by KZN Tourism and Film Authority on behalf of the Economic Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs department.
