Three AFDA alumni have been nominated for four awards at the African Social Entertainment Awards. The awards aim to give a much-needed appreciation to the ever-growing social media industry and to give a factual presentation of Africans lifestyle to other continents.

AFDA DBN Live Performance alumna and digital content creator Paballo “Mam’ K” Kgware received a nomination for the Best Newcomer Social Media Comedian Award. Paballo has become a Tik Tok sensation overnight with 800K followers and 18.1 million likes.

“No Mmapula I khant” and “Monnaka bought it cash” are probably two phrases that have made you chuckle while watching social media videos of the rich makoti who refuses to operate a kettle that isn’t touch-controlled at family events.

AFDA JHB Motion Medium Picture alumnus Ofentse Mwase picked up two nominations for Best Video Director of the Year award and Most Creative award. Ofentse is a multi-award winning cinematographer, filmmaker and social media content guru. His Youtube channels boast close to 1 million subscribers.

He won the Best Achievement in Cinematography for the TV Drama “Tjovitjo” at the SAFTA 2018 and the Best Cinematography Award at the Discover Film Awards in London 2017 for his work on the multi-award winning short film “The Hangman”. He also won Music Video of the Year at the 2017 South African Music Awards (SAMA) for his video for Miss Pru titled Ameni. Ofentse established his production company OM Films in 2009.

AFDA JHB Live Performance alumnus Thabo Malema received a nomination for the Best Stylist award. Thabo is a seasoned actor with both international and local recognition. His local work includes films such as “White Lion” and “Kalushi”. He has featured in Television productions such as The Lab and Room 9, Single Guys and Gold Diggers to name but a few.
