AFDA alumna Karlé Briedenhann’s journey into the world of performance began at AFDA Cape Town, where she pursued a B.A. in Live Performance. Her talent was evident as she graduated on the Dean’s List and earned the Best Supporting Actress award for her role in the film Kuiergat.
Following her studies, Karlé’s stage presence captivated audiences in several musicals, including Boy Meets Boy (2013), Oklahoma! (2014), The Mikado (2015), and Die Sideboard (2015). Her versatility extended to film, where she starred in feature films such as Recce (2018) and A Christmas Chorus (2020), as well as various independent short films.
In 2010, Karlé took a significant step by opening her own drama academy. There, she taught and coached schoolchildren in public speaking, drama, and performance. It was during this time that she began writing poems for performance pieces, a creative outlet that would later flourish. In 2024, some of these poems were published in the February edition of Die Klasgids by LAPA Publishers, marking a significant milestone in her writing career.
Karlé’s writing journey continued as she penned several independent short films. Her most notable work, Sewe, began as a stage play performed at the 2024 Suidoosterfees. The play, which she wrote and starred in alongside Johan Falck, was later adapted into a short film for the 2025 Silwerskermfees. In the film, she took on the roles of producer, writer, and lead actress. Sewe explores the complexities of domestic abuse and the emotional journey of individuals trapped in such relationships. The film received critical acclaim and earned her a nomination for Best Screenplay for a Short Film at the Silwerskerm Awards.
In addition to her film achievements, Sewe will have two free screenings at the Woordfees this week, on the 15th and 17th of October. For those unable to attend in person, the film is available on DStv CatchUp until the 18th of October.
