AFDA Cape Town Lecturer Zain Omarjee Releases Debut Novel – When The Cherished Is Home

At AFDA’s Cape Town campus, storytelling is often taught as both craft and calling. For AFDA lecturer Zain Omarjee, that philosophy has culminated in the release of his debut novel, When The Cherished Is Home, a deeply introspective work shaped over five years as what he describes as a true “labour of love.”

Blending poetic memoir with spiritual inquiry, the book is not simply a narrative, but an invitation. It asks readers to reconsider the idea of “home”, not as a physical location, but as a layered inner dwelling composed of the body, mind, memory, and spirit. Through this lens, Zain reframes the self as a sacred space, one that must be consciously prepared for what he calls the “Most Cherished Guest”: the Divine within.

The journey to publication has been both personal and disciplined. Over half a decade, Zain developed a body of work that resists easy categorisation, moving fluidly between theology, psychology, grief, and artistic reflection. The result is a text that is as meditative as it is emotionally grounded and that encourages readers to sit with discomfort rather than bypass it.

At its core, When The Cherished Is Home explores the architecture of the inner life. Each chapter opens a new “room” within the self, physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual, guiding readers toward a more conscious relationship with their own existence. Rather than offering prescriptive solutions, the book positions healing as a process of awareness and presence. It is, as Zain suggests, less about fixing oneself and more about learning how to “host” one’s own experience with honesty.

This philosophy is echoed in one of the book’s central reflections: “The Cherished Guest does not come for the architecture, but for the atmosphere we build within it.” It is a sentiment that encapsulates the work’s broader message—that wholeness is not achieved through perfection, but through openness.

Born and raised in Johannesburg, Zain’s voice is shaped by a background that merges intellectual curiosity with lived experience. Coming from a family rooted in education and inquiry, he approaches spirituality, psychology, and memory not as separate disciplines, but as interconnected spaces. This interdisciplinary sensibility is evident throughout his writing, where science, faith, and art are allowed to coexist without hierarchy.

Beyond his work as an author, Zain is also an established creative practitioner. As a lecturer and traditional artist, he has contributed to the development of emerging storytellers, while continuing to explore his own voice. His earlier short story, In The Ghost Garden (2025), marked the beginning of his published journey, laying the groundwork for the more expansive vision realised in his debut novel.
Published in February 2026, When The Cherished Is Home has already been described as a “lyrical journey through the many rooms of your being,” inviting readers to navigate grief, resilience, and self-discovery with compassion and depth.

Ultimately, the book resists the idea of arrival as a final destination. Instead, it offers a quiet but powerful reminder: that the search for meaning, belonging, and divine connection does not lead outward, but inward. In recognising this, Zain suggests, one comes to understand a simple yet profound truth, home is not something to be found, but something to be remembered.
