On 22 May 2025, the Haven Night Shelter Organisation hosted a skills-based resume training workshop for social workers, organised in partnership with Octotel and RSA Web, who provide fibre connectivity to Haven Shelters across the Western Cape.
The training was led by Dr Christopher John, Social Responsibility and Funding Officer at AFDA. The aim was to equip social workers with practical tools to help clients experiencing homelessness or long-term unemployment re-enter the workforce. Traditional CVs often emphasise continuous employment, which creates barriers for those with gaps in work history. Instead, the new skills-based resume template focuses on formal and informal skills gained through work, volunteering, caregiving, or life experience.
During the three-hour session, social workers were guided step by step on how to use the template. They learned how to identify clients’ transferable skills, present them in professional language, and adapt resumes for different job opportunities.
The workshop has a lasting impact: social workers are now better equipped to empower their clients with stronger, more persuasive resumes—helping them move confidently back into employment. This initiative is a powerful example of how collaboration between non-profit organisations, higher education, and the private sector can create lasting change.
