AFDA alumni Corné and René van Rooyen continue to shape South Africa’s television landscape with their latest drama series, Beter as Gister, premiering on kykNET on 30 June 2026. The 13-episode series is produced, directed and written by the acclaimed AFDA alumni duo, while fellow AFDA alumnus Dino Benedetti serves as Director of Photography.
Produced by Red Letter Day Pictures, Beter as Gister explores the complexities of modern fatherhood through the stories of four South African families. Inspired by Corné van Rooyen’s own experiences of becoming a father during the Covid-19 pandemic, the series challenges traditional perceptions of masculinity, parenting and family responsibility by asking a simple but powerful question: Why are fathers often measured by a different standard than mothers?
Through a diverse cast of characters navigating family challenges, personal struggles and opportunities for redemption, Beter as Gister offers a thoughtful and emotionally resonant portrayal of parenthood.
