AFDA proudly celebrates alumni Mandla N and Melissa Nayimuli, who continue to shape the future of South African storytelling as the creative force behind Netflix’s highly anticipated drama series Umthetho.
As Creative Directors, the husband-and-wife team are responsible for defining the series’ creative vision, ensuring that every aspect of the production delivers a compelling, authentic and cinematic viewing experience. Their collaboration is a powerful example of how AFDA graduates are not only succeeding individually but are building world-class creative enterprises together.
Mandla N, one of South Africa’s most accomplished filmmakers and founder of Black Brain Pictures, takes on multiple leadership roles on Umthetho. Alongside serving as Creative Director, he is one of the series’ lead directors and an Executive Producer, continuing a remarkable career that has seen him create some of South Africa’s most successful television productions. Since founding Black Brain Pictures after graduating from AFDA, Mandla N has produced award-winning and audience-favourite series including Lockdown, DiepCity and The Black Door, earning more than 30 SAFTA Golden Horn Awards along the way.
Working alongside him is fellow AFDA alumna Melissa Nayimuli, who has established herself as an accomplished producer and creative executive at Black Brain Pictures. As Creative Director on Umthetho, Melissa plays a key role in shaping the visual identity, storytelling approach and overall narrative tone of the series, helping bring one of Netflix’s latest South African productions to life.
Melissa’s journey reflects the versatility of an AFDA education. A passionate storyteller, producer and creative leader, she has successfully combined careers in film, television and modelling. Her achievements include representing South Africa as Miss Universe South Africa 2025 while continuing to build an impressive career within the country’s screen industry.
Umthetho, produced by Black Brain Pictures for Netflix, is set to premiere on 14 August 2026 and is already generating significant excitement. The eight-part drama further strengthens South Africa’s growing reputation as a producer of premium television for global audiences and showcases the calibre of creative leadership emerging from AFDA alumni.
For AFDA, the success of Mandla N and Melissa Nayimuli is more than an alumni achievement, it is a testament to the power of collaboration, entrepreneurial thinking and creative excellence. Together they demonstrate how AFDA graduates are participating in the creative economy and leading it, creating stories that resonate locally while reaching audiences around the world.
As South African productions continue to gain international recognition, AFDA celebrates Mandla N and Melissa Nayimuli for flying the flag for African storytelling and inspiring the next generation of filmmakers, producers and creative entrepreneurs to create, build, own and lead.
