AFDA Alumni Celebrate International Success as Amazeze (Fleas) Wins Best Short Film at ZIFF

AFDA proudly celebrates the international success of Amazeze (Fleas), written and directed by AFDA alumnus Jordy Sank, which has been awarded Best Short Film at the 2026 Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF), one of Africa’s most respected film festivals.
Amazeze (Fleas) follows Tonderai, a young Zimbabwean boy living in a South African township, who is forced to protect his gravely ill younger brother while xenophobic violence erupts around them. Through the eyes of a child, the film delivers a deeply moving exploration of displacement, fear, resilience and the devastating human cost of prejudice.
The film has enjoyed an impressive international festival journey, beginning with its world premiere at the prestigious Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, before screening at leading festivals including the Durban International Film Festival, Joburg Film Festival, the South African Film Festival in Australia, and now earning top honours at ZIFF.
The achievement is also a testament to the collaborative strength of AFDA alumni working across multiple creative disciplines. Joining Jordy Sank on the production were fellow AFDA graduates:
  • Esther Badenhorst – Editor
  • Edward George King – Composer
  • Jaco van Bosch – Visual Effects (VFX)
Their collective contribution demonstrates the collaborative spirit fostered at AFDA, where graduates continue to build creative partnerships long after completing their studies.
The film’s success also reflects the growing global impact of AFDA alumni, whose work consistently tackles complex social issues with artistic courage and technical excellence. Amazeze (Fleas) is both a compelling cinematic achievement and an important conversation starter, reminding audiences of the human stories behind xenophobia and displacement.
AFDA congratulates Jordy Sank, Esther Badenhorst, Edward George King and Jaco van Bosch on this outstanding achievement. Their success at the Zanzibar International Film Festival is a proud moment for the AFDA community and an inspiring example of South African storytelling making a meaningful impact on the world stage.
