AFDA proudly celebrates the experimental film Between Worlds, which has been officially selected to screen at the prestigious 2026 Joburg Film Festival. This exciting opportunity comes after the film’s successful debut at the AFDA Experimental Festival 2025, where it first captivated audiences with its bold and immersive storytelling.
Written and directed by Njabulo Ndawonde, co-directed by Daniella Khoele, and produced by Akhona Mthembu and Lusanda Shezi, Between Worlds is an evocative experimental piece that explores trauma, healing, and the interconnectedness of the physical and spiritual.
The film follows Buhle, a young woman who flees abuse at the hands of her stepmother, MaKasi. Seeking refuge, she discovers a mystical river, a threshold between the physical world and the spiritual realm. Here, she meets Mandla, a gentle soul who offers comfort and companionship. Unbeknownst to Buhle, her grandmother Mamrubata watches over her from the ancestral realm, guiding her toward self-discovery and healing as she navigates the challenges of her past and present.
This selection marks another achievement for Between Worlds. In 2025, the film was selected for and won an award at the Umlazi International Film Festival, underscoring its impact and resonance with audiences and critics alike. AFDA celebrates this continued recognition of its students’ creativity and excellence across international platforms.
The Joburg Film Festival returns for its 8th edition from 3–8 March 2026, showcasing a vibrant lineup of films from across the continent and globe under the theme “Feel the Frame.” The festival is renowned for championing innovative storytelling and uplifting emerging voices in film.
