AFDA Johannesburg, Goethe-Institut and SACOMM launch film screening series

Jan 27, 2023 | News

A deeply missed Johannesburg tradition is coming back to life: Weekly film screenings aiming to shape not only a community of practice in the industry but also to develop academic dialogue around films, and to strengthen the ties within the creative community.

Weekly screenings on a Monday night are planned throughout 2023 and will be hosted on the AFDA Johannesburg Campus in Braamfontein Werft.

The series will kick off with Burhan Qurbani´s 2020 re-imagination of Walter Fassbinders 1980 film based on the novel by Alfred Döblin “Berlin Alexander Platz”.

“Berlin Alexander Platz” by Qurbani is a powerful and thought-provoking film that explores the complexities of modern society and the human condition. The film has received widespread acclaim for its stunning cinematography, powerful performances, and thought-provoking themes. The film is being screened courtesy of the Filmarchiv of the Goethe-Institut.

Further screenings in February include “The Fragile King” a road movie across South Africa directed by AFDA Alumnus Tristan Holmes, and “Letter to my Cousin” a deeply personal documentary directed Henion Han from 1999 talking about identity in a deeply personal way. Please follow Goethe-Institut, AFDA or SACOMM Social Media for updates on the series.
