Venessa Buthelezi is a seasoned South African Film and Television Executive with over 15 years of experience in local and international media. Known as “The Worker Bee” for her relentless drive, she has earned a reputation for her creative leadership and storytelling excellence.
Her diverse portfolio includes work for major broadcasters like DStv, M-Net, 1Magic, VuzuTV, Channel O, Mzansi Magic, SuperSport, and Fox TV. She has led acclaimed projects including The Incredible Story of Phillip Ndou, The Untold Story of Doctor Khumalo, and Tracking Thabo Bester.
In 2024, she joined the Earthshot Prize team in a senior role, collaborating with Prince William and the Royal Household. Her production credits also span major live events such as the Channel O Music Video Awards and Miss South Africa, as well as global branded content campaigns for AB InBev.
Venessa has worked with icons like Oprah Winfrey, Naomi Campbell, Tiwa Savage, Burna Boy, and Skrillex, and spent six years hosting hitrefresh, a deep house music show. A former Broadcast Executive at MultiChoice and Showmax, she is now the founder and CEO of Painted Odyssey Films, a media studio championing African narratives across formats.
Beyond media, she is Director of WATA, a non-profit empowering women, LGBTQI+ individuals, and marginalized creatives through inclusive storytelling and skills development.
Venessa’s mission is clear: to tell bold African stories, foster equity in media, and inspire global connection—led by her belief that “creating is an iron fist in a velvet glove.”
