Lungelo Kuzwayo, Senior Lecturer in Directing at AFDA Johannesburg, exemplifies the synergy between academic mentorship and active industry engagement. His dual roles not only enrich the educational experience of his students but also keep him at the forefront of South Africa’s film landscape.
With a Master of Fine Arts from Columbia College Chicago and a Master of Arts from Illinois State University, Lungelo brings a wealth of international academic experience to AFDA. His commitment to the South African film industry is evident through his roles as a board member of the Independent Black Filmmakers Collective (IBFC) and as a member of the Writers Guild of South Africa (WGSA).
Lungelo’s filmography includes over a dozen short films, two short documentaries, and a multi-camera TV music program. His 2015 short film, Sawubona, garnered international acclaim, screening across five continents and earning multiple awards, such as Best International Short Film at the AFC Global Fest in Kolkata and Best Short Film at the Kasi Vibe Film Festival in Johannesburg.
Another notable work, The Note, achieved significant recognition, winning the Audience Award at the Johannesburg 48-Hour Film Festival, Best Story and Best Cinematography at the Cape Town Squad Film Festival, and Best Director and Best South African Short at the Thokoza Film Festival.
Lungelo’s active participation in filmmaking projects provides his students with real-world insights and practical knowledge. His involvement in both academic and professional spheres ensures that his teaching remains current and relevant, preparing students for the evolving demands of the film industry.
Currently, Lungelo is in post-production on a proof-of-concept short film exploring African magic realism, centered on the myth of uMamlambo, a shapeshifting creature associated with wealth and blood sacrifices. This project underscores his dedication to bringing African narratives to the forefront of cinema.
