“The team at RAW Film Festival Khayelitsha was blown away by the submissions from AFDA students this year. The quality of work coming out of all the AFDA campuses throughout the country makes us very excited for this next generation of filmmakers in South Africa. We are honoured to be able to showcase 6 short films from ADFA in our programme this year and are excited to see what the future has in store for these talented filmmakers.” says Raw Film Festival Manager, Frankie Stromberg.

“The AFDA Johannesburg Film School is very proud of the success that our Motion Picture third year graduation film “Anguish” has already attracted. Add to that this latest accolade that also includes our Postgrad film “Beneath The Sand” and we are doubly proud. Congratulations to all the crew & cast as well as all the entries from our sister campuses – clearly we are doing something right!” says AFDA Johannesburg dean David Dennis.

“We are absolutely thrilled and deeply honored to have our documentary, “Amadelakufa Esizwe”, selected for the RAW Film Festival! This recognition means the world to us, and we’re excited to share our work on such an esteemed platform.” says director Nhlakanipho Mngomezulu.

RAW Film Festival, Khayelitsha was launched in 2023 as a collaborative project between the Isivivana Centre and the Bertha Movie House in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. The festival’s goal is to provide a much needed platform in Khayelitsha for showcasing and celebrating emerging talent in the South African film industry. Through workshops, showcases and panel talks RAW Film Festival aims to provide support and guidance to young filmmakers from Khayelitsha and surrounding communities.

All events and screenings at the festival are free to attend, ensuring anybody with a love for film, and a desire to be part of a wider filmmaking community in the area, are able to take part. This year RAW Film Festival will showcase 29 short films, host 5 filmmaking workshops and 3 panel talks. For 2024 we will award a best short film prize in the Narrative, Documentary and Experimental categories with the winner’s being voted for and decided for by the audiences in attendance at our screenings events. The festival runs from the 2nd to 10th August with all screenings and events hosted at the Isivivana Centre in Khayelitsha.
