Mid-year intake Fee Structure:

The fee for the 2024 mid-year intake will be the same as the standard Higher Certificate fee as per the 2024 Fee Structure. Please see the Programme Overview section below for more details.

The 1-year Higher Certificate in Film, Television and Entertainment Production programme is designed to equip students with the necessary skills for entry-level roles across the commercial, film, and television industries. Students will gain hands-on practical experience and valuable insights into the intricate workings of running a film or television set.  Students will explore a spectrum of essential assist positions, including those in Art Department and Post-Production. The programme also offers comprehensive, hands-on technical and practical training in the Camera Department, Lighting and Grips.  Successful completion of the Higher Certificate programme will prepare graduates to embark on fulfilling assist-careers in the industry or seamlessly enter degree-level studies at AFDA.

 

Fee Structure:

The fee for the 2024 Higher Certificate mid-year intake is the same as the 2024 standard Higher Certificate fee, as per the 2024 Fee Structure.   The fees have been structured to provide the following benefits to fee-payers:

      • 5% discount for upfront payment: To qualify for the discount, the full programme fee of R85 280 needs to be settled on or before 31 August 2024.
      • Students will be invoiced 60% of the total fee in 2024 (July 2024 – December 2024).
      • The remaining 40% of fees will be invoiced from March 2025 – June 2025. This gives the student/fee payer a payment break between January 2025 and February 2025.
      • The standard registration fee of R1950 will apply, in order to secure the student a place in the class (payable upon receiving a Letter of Acceptance).

The 2024 mid-year intake term dates are as follows:

  • Term 1:      17 July 2024 – 6 September 2024
  • Term 2:      30 September 2024 – 15 November 2024
  • Term 3:      3 March 2025 – 18 April 2025
  • Term 4:      12 May 2025 – 27 June 2025

The 1-year programme is structured into two modules, each running for a semester (6 months).

Module 1:  Production and Art Department

This module involves concentrated and creatively driven learning inputs, aimed at preparing students for Production Assist positions within the film and entertainment industry. It is specifically designed to introduce students to the various production assist positions in the various production departments as well as the practical aspects of filmmaking and production delivered through hands-on practical, theory and analytical academic classes. Students will be introduced to the roles, duties and functions of the Production Team on set, including the assist positions in Art Department and Post-Production.

Art Department:  Students will attend practical art department workshops in preparation for the role of the art department assistant on set, including training in the protocol, tools and techniques required.  Emphasis on script interpretation and sourcing of props / wardrobe, with a grounding in budgets and recons as well as industry roles and responsibilities.

Post-Production:  Students will also gain insight and practical training in the role of Post-Production Co-ordinator.  During practical workshops, students will be introduced to the edit facilities and software in the Post-Production Department.

 

Module 2: Technical

This is a focused and robust module aimed at preparing students for Technical Assist positions within the film and entertainment industry. The learning is specifically designed to introduce students to the various technical and practical aspects of filmmaking delivered through hands-on practical, theory and analytical academic classes. Students will be introduced to the roles, duties and functions of a technical assist positions of the film crew on set as well as the fundamental principles and practical process and operation of the Camera Department, Lighting and Grips.

Camera Department:  This lays the foundation for students with a passion for cameras and photography who are keen to gain experience towards becoming camera assistants / VTO operators / location scouts and/or stills photographers.  Emphasis is placed on equipment familiarity, handling and responsibility with a grounding in workflow.

Grips and Lighting:  Students will gain technical experience towards becoming grip assistants and lighting sparks in the film, commercial and television industries.   Practical and technical training on aspects such as equipment familiarity, handling and responsibility with a grounding in safety standings is covered.
