Description

The Technical stream is a focused and robust programme aimed at preparing students for Technical Assist positions within the film and entertainment industry. The course is specifically designed to introduce students to the various technical and practical aspects of filmmaking delivered through hands-on practical, theory and analytical academic classes. Students will be introduced to the roles, duties and functions of  technical assist positions of the film crew on set, as well as the fundamental principles and practical process and operation of the Camera Department, Data Wrangling, Lighting and Grips, Multi- Camera and Sound.

Modules:

INTRODUCTION TO CAMERA: Camera assistant training within the film industry.

This module lays the foundation for students with a passion for cameras and photography who are keen to gain experience towards becoming camera assistants / VTO operators / Location scouts and/or stills photographers.  Emphasis on equipment familiarity, handling and responsibility with a grounding in workflow is offered.  The focus of an internship / off-campus experience could include assisting at camera facility houses or on film sets in a trainee camera assistant position.

INTRODUCTION TO GRIPS AND LIGHTING: Technical assistant training within the film industry.                                              

This module lays the foundation for students keen to gain technical experience towards becoming grip assistants and lighting sparks in the film, commercial and television industries.   Emphasis on equipment familiarity, handling and responsibility with a grounding in safety standings is offered.  Possible internships or off-campus experience can include assisting at camera, grips and lighting facility houses and/or on film or television shoots in a trainee technical assistant position.

INTRODUCTION TO THE MULTICAM TELEVISION STUDIO: Technical assistant training in the multicamera television studio.

This module lays the foundation for students keen to gain technical experience towards becoming television studio assistants in the television and commercial industry.  Practical training and equipment familiarity  in a working multicamera studio is emphasised. The focus of internships or off-campus experience can include assisting at film/TV studios and on television shoots in a trainee studio assistant position.

INTRODUCTION TO RIGGING FOR LIVE PERFORMANCE:  Technical assistant training in rigging and sound for live performance.

This module lays the foundation for students keen to gain technical experience in rigging in the live performance industry at an assistant level.  Emphasis on practical training in stage, audiovisual, sound, studio sets and lighting rigging, with a grounding in safety standards is offered.  Internships or off-campus experience can include assisting at theatres and/or live events in a trainee rigging position.

Description:

The Production stream is a concentrated and creatively driven programme aimed at preparing students for Production Assist positions within the film and entertainment industry. The programme is specifically designed to introduce students to production assist positions in the various production departments as well as the practical aspects of filmmaking and production, delivered through hands-on practical, theory and analytical academic classes. Students will be introduced to the roles, duties and functions of the Production Team on set as well as the fundamental principles, managerial and practical responsibilities of the Producer Assist; the Production Co-ordinator Assist; the Cast Co-ordinator Assist; the Make-up & Wardrobe Departments Assist; and Art Department Assist.

INTRODUCTION TO PRODUCTION CO-ORDINATION :  Production and cast co-ordination training within the commercial, film and television industries.

This module lays the foundation for students keen to gain entry-level production and cast co-ordination skills within the production and cast departments in the entertainment industry.  Emphasis on call sheet and budget interpretation, industry regulations and communication skills with a grounding in industry roles and responsibilities is offered.  The focus of an internship / off-campus experience can include assisting at production houses and casting companies in a production co-ordinator / cast co-ordinator trainee capacity.

INTRODUCTION TO CMS (COSTUME, MAKE-UP AND STYLING):  Assist training for Wardrobe, makeup and styling within the stills, film and television industries.                                             

This module lays the foundation for students keen to gain practical experience as makeup, wardrobe and/or styling assistants within the entertainment industry.   Emphasis on practical training in the wardrobe, makeup and styling departments with a grounding in industry roles and responsibilities is offered.  Possible internship or off-campus experience can include assisting wardrobe and makeup stylists on film, commercial and/or television shoots in a trainee wardrobe, makeup and styling assistant capacity.

INTRODUCTION TO ART DEPARTMENT:  Assist training for Art department within the entertainment industry.

This module lays the foundation for students keen to gain experience as art department assistants.  Students gain an understanding of script interpretation and sourcing of props / wardrobe, with a grounding in budgets and reconciliations as well as industry roles and responsibilities.  Internships or off-campus experience may include assisting art directors, in props warehouses, set construction companies and/or on film, commercial and television shoots in a trainee art department assistant capacity.

INTRODUCTION TO STAGE MANAGEMENT: Assistant stage management training within the Live Performance industry.  

This module focuses on technical assistant training in rigging and sound for live performances.  Students gain experience in stage management, including backstage and front of house responsibilities at an assistant level in the live performance industry.  Particular emphasis is placed on interpreting technical schedules and design components, as well as rehearsal procedures and processes with a grounding in theatre roles and responsibilities. Possible internships or off-campus experience may include assisting in theatre and live performance productions in a trainee stage management position.

Description

All AFDA Higher Certificate programmes include an Academic Development component that is aimed at honing the students’ academic and analytical competencies.  This serves to prepare students for further academic studies, should they choose to continue their academic journey through the various degree courses offered by AFDA.
