Overview

Higher Certificate in Film, Television & Entertainment Production

The AFDA Higher Certificate in Film, Television and Entertainment Production is a 1-year NQF level 5 programme designed to lay a foundation of basic skills and learning to enter the creative economy at an assistant level.  Successful completion of an AFDA Higher Certificate programme will also enable students access to degree level education (NQF level 7).

In addition to gaining insight into sectors of the creative economy, a Higher Certificate at AFDA will develop students’ capacity for learning through collaboration and an intrinsic practical understanding of disciplines and career possibilities in media and entertainment.

The Higher Certificate in Film, Television and Entertainment Production focuses on the various technical and/or practical aspects of filmmaking. There are 2 streams within the programme – the Technical Stream and the Production & Art Department Stream*.  The Technical Department includes introductions to industry-standard equipment including to camera, grips and lighting.  In the Production and Art Department stream, students are introduced to production co-ordination and stage management, as well as to the highly creative aspects such as wardrobe, makeup & styling.

*The Stream availability and selection process will be discussed in detail with students at the start of Term 1 on each respective campus.

Course Structure

In the Higher Certificate programme there are 3 subjects and students are required to take all three. Each of these subjects can be approached from a more technical standpoint or a production & art related standpoint and these options are discussed with students in detail during the Higher Certificate orientation at the start of the First Term each year.

1.  Film Production Literacy (FPL):

In Film Production Literacy, students enhance their general academic and computer literacies through research assignments and presentations on topics aligned to the content of the other two subjects.

2.  Film Production Analysis (FPA):

In Film Production Analysis students engage in research and the analysis of industry related texts for production purposes. Examples of these texts include scripts, call sheets, production schedules, and prop lists. The purpose of this analysis is to equip students with skills required to manage and generate these in the world of work.

3.  Film Production Technical (FPT):

In Film Production Technical students attend practical workshops in the modules on offer. The workshops teach students assistant skills in the gear and facilities associated with a variety of disciplines in the entertainment industries, such as camera equipment, prop stores, make-up kits, and multi-camera studios.
