AFDA is proud to announce that AFDA Durban Head of Film School, Dr Mahoro Semege’s PhD paper won the 2019 Best Paper award at the National Doctoral Conference convened by the National Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences. Entitled Film as Dialogue: Documentary Theorisation through Practice, this paper is based on Forsaken (Mahoro Semege 2019), a documentary he made to test the documentary's ability to address social issues beneficially. The paper presents and argues for a culturally attuned theory of civic intervention documentary.

Apart from meeting the criteria of consistency of argument, clear contribution to knowledge, and innovative research method, it is on the basis of the soundness of his theory that the paper won. The conference brings together scholars and PhD students from all the universities in South Africa.
