Busisiwe Hlatswayo has recently been appointed as Head of School for Business Innovation and Technology (BIT) at AFDA Johannesburg. This school has two Undergraduate programmes, the BCom in Business Innovation and Entrepreneurship (currently running on Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban campuses) and the Bachelor of Computer Technology (coming to Johannesburg in 2020).

“I’m so excited about our AFDA BIT programmes where we teach our students the art of digital disruption. Where was this course when I was fumbling with my start-up I created in 2015? When I was introduced to the BIT programmes I was able to pinpoint exactly where I went wrong with my start-up. If I had the training that the AFDA BCom offers I would have had better chances of succeeding.  I would of at least have gone to the market when I was ready.

Yes!!! We get our students to practice digital disruption and innovation for 3 years in teams (learning how to work with different kinds of people in a team) - Shark Tank/Dragons Den/Apprentice style. In their final year we actually get industry experts to test the viability of their business ide.  Can you imagine being trained to be comfortable with having your business idea questioned and the ability to research it well enough to defend it? Everything that we teach in the degree programmes is geared towards business, unlike the traditional BCom where over half of what you study will probably never be of use. A crucial part of the programme is the requirement that the students business start-up idea must self-fund and not require external funding.

Not only is this a ground breaking degree, but a degree for now. South Africa has a high unemployment rate, the number of graduates who cannot find employment increases every year. Only 10% of start-ups make it through the 5th year – of course the number changes based on which publication you read. The South African economy needs these type of graduates who will become entrepreneurs, innovators and problem solvers. The other exciting part of this program is the type of graduate that it produces. Due to the type of training we offer, our graduates are ready to hit the ground running in any workplace. They have been trained to look for solutions, articulate, validate and implement them. This right here is the future and I get to be part of it.”

Busisiwe holds a BCom. Accounting Science Degree (UP), Transformational Coaching Certificate (LCA), an Advanced Program in Risk Management, (Unisa) and MBA (Henley Business School). She a Business Coach, a Governance and Risk Management Practitioner and Prince2 Project Management Practitioner. She has over 10 years’ experience in Accounting, Auditing, Governance, Risk, and Compliance Management and has been a Business Coach for the past 5 years. She is a founding director of AllThingsWomen Launchpad Coaching, an organization whose focus is the creation of a pipeline of female leaders in the workplace
