Film, Television & Entertainment Production


The Higher Certificate (HC) Courses serve a dual function. First and foremost it is a one-year foundation course designed to offer students access into the first year of undergraduate degree studies at AFDA. In addition, it is an NQF 5 exit level higher certificate equipping students with skills allowing them to be placed in the entertainment (film/ tv/ events/ theatre etc.) industry in assistant-type positions to key crew. 


This course lays the foundation for students keen to gain technical experience in rigging in the performance industry at an assistant level either with technical-based skills or art department and production-based skills. Emphasis on a wide range of practical training in stage, audio-visual, sound, studio sets and lighting rigging, with grounding in safety standards, as well as the basics in art department (costume/ makeup/ props) and production (management, scheduling, call sheets) etc.


Focus of internship/off campus experience will be with rigging companies and/or in film or television studios in a trainee rigging, an on-set assistant position or in relevant departments at a company or within AFDA's company structures.
